Following the recent publication of This Green is Not Green, letters between Shakir Hassan al Sa’id and Hanaa Malallah, we are delighted to welcome Hanaa back to The Park Gallery where she will give a talk that concerns letter No.2, received from al Sa’id in 1996.
In this, one of twelve letters written by al Sa’id to Malallah between February and November 1996, he remarks on the relationship between the colours experienced in a garden he had visited and the rug he used for prayer. The references to various shades of green of which al Sa’id writes are scrutinised by Malallah and an imagined philosophical discussion takes place in her mind after the death of her correspondent. For Malallah the greens of nature are as distinct from the human manufactured greens as truth and false. Using an exhibition of artworks and a previously unpublished video and drawing upon examples in al Sa’id’s works of the 1990’s, Malallah seeks to continue a metaphysical approach to their correspondence.
